Director of youth, children & families

General Description: The Director of Youth, Children and Families will be an individual who is personally invested in the faith formation and coordination of ministry to children and youth (ages 0-18) as well as their families.

The Director should have basic knowledge of scripture, the faith practices of the Disciples of Christ, and effective strategies to navigate the needs of our youth, children, and families in an ever-evolving community. First Christian Church requires a director who is capable of developing and leading a team of volunteers, who is personable and connects easily with children, youth, and adults, and who will make meaningful connections within the congregation and community at large. The Director of Youth, Children, and Families is not designed to be an ordained/called position. An ordained minister may fill this position, but it is not required. 

  • General Responsibilities:
  •          Creatively develop, implement, and maintain, faith-building activities for children from birth to 18 years old to include Worship & Wonder, Youth Group, quest, Vacation Bible School, and other Sunday morning and mid-week programming.
  •          Serve as liaison for FCC youth with regional DoC youth opportunities (camps, retreats, Regional Assembly, etc).
  •          Evaluate the success, failures, and relevance of programming and adjust accordingly.
  •          Cultivate authentic relationships with children, teens, parents, and volunteers; foster full integration of children and youth into worship, volunteer opportunities, and other multi-generational experiences as appropriate by utilizing youth and children during worship service elements.
  •          Design, organize, implement, and participate in worship, congregational events, service projects, and retreats for youth, children, and families.
  •          Communicate with Senior Minister on any and all ministry needs that come up with respect to confidentiality and privacy.
  •          Participate in all General Board meetings, with a written report of duties performed.

*Other miscellaneous responsibilities/duties could be assigned at the discretion of the Senior Minister or General Board.  

Specific Responsibilities:

  •          Make calls/contact (personal/phone/email/written) reminders to the youth and families as related to the development of the program.
  •          Foster and manage the total growth of the program, both numerically and spiritually (baptisms, conversions, etc.)
  •          Be available for Sunday morning worship on a regular basis to direct youth, children, and family involvement in worship. Adhere to any other responsibilities delegated by Senior Minister pertaining to worship participation.
  •          Implement appropriate curriculums for grade bands: Pre-School, 1st-3rd, 4th-6th, middle and high school, and multigenerational events and activities.
  •          Manage church nursery.
  •          Adhere to Safe Church practices and policies in all aspects of ministry.
  •          Weekly participation in staff meetings.
  •          Develop, manage and oversee the annual Youth Mission Trip in accordance with budgetary considerations.
  •          Develop, manage and oversee midweek educational programming for youth and children to include recruiting, training, and assigning youth leaders to appropriate programs.
  •          Coordinate Children’s Christmas and Easter programming with Music Minister.
  •          Develop, manage and coordinate fundraising opportunities that are missional and evangelistic in nature, and in line with Disciples of Christ ecclesiology.
  •          Manage the Youth, Children and Families budget with accurate receipts and documented costs/expenses.
  •          Develop, participate and Oversee annual VBS (Vacation Bible School)
  •          Participate in semi-annual performance evaluations with the Senior Minister.

Minimum Requirements:

  •          Either of the following:
  • o   An associate’s degree and at least five years of experience working with youth, children, or families related to educational programming (or related field).
  • o   Bachelor's degree and at least three years of experience working with youth, children, or families related to educational programming (or related field).
  •          Some professional training/experience in implementing and/or developing religious education is preferable but not required.
  •          Willingness to become a member of First Christian Church, Shelbyville.
  •          Awareness of, or willingness to learn, about the theology and faith formation of the Disciples of Christ denomination.
  •          Flexibility in hours and hybrid scheduling as an option. This position works weekdays, Sundays, Christmas Eve, Easter, and possibly other standard holidays.
  • o   Weekday hours are flexible and can be determined based on programming needs and at the discretion of the Senior Minister.
  •          Ability to successfully complete a criminal background check.
  •          A valid driver’s license and ability to drive.
  •          CPR trained or willing to receive CPR training.

The Director will work with: Senior Minister, Director of Music, Office Manager, Elders, Deacons, General Board members, parents/guardians and Committee Chairs.

Termination: The Director of Youth, Children, and Families or General Board may terminate the employed position with a 30-day notice by either party.

Compensation: Salary range mid to high 50’s.

Benefits: Healthcare stipend up to 1k dollars per month, retirement plan match of 5%, cell phone, and milage reimbursement.
