sundays:  Things to know ahead of time

It isn't always easy stepping foot into a new church.  Below are some frequently asked questions.

WHAT IS THE CHRISTIAN CHURCH (DISCIPLES OF CHRIST)?

The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) sprang from two movements that took place simultaneously in Pennsylvania and Kentucky during the Restoration Movement of the early 19th century.  We are ecumenical, meaning we promote the unity and respect of all Christian Churches, and we firmly believe that everyone is invited to the Lord's Table.  We have a vision of and a passion for justice, for loving and serving all people.  We reject the use of creeds and invite you to interpret the Bible without ordered doctrine.  We are governed by our congregation and have an active lay ministry.  Learn more at disciples.org.

DO I HAVE TO INTRODUCE MYSELF DURING WORSHIP?

No.  Do you like to blend in?  Not a fan of "all eyes on you?"  Not a problem.  While we do offer the chance to introduce yourself during worship (and we love meeting new people), you will not be singled out.

CAN I WEAR JEANS?

Uhm...did Jesus wear dress pants?  We are here to glorify God.  Please do so in attire that helps you do just that, whatever that may be.

WHAT IF I DON'T WANT TO TAKE COMMUNION?

No one is forced to take communion.  Communion is a sacred encounter with Christ.  We welcome all believers in Christ to celebrate the Lord's Supper regardless of denomination, but if you aren't comfortable taking communion, simply and politely pass the tray to your neighbor.  If you have questions about communion, we encourage you to set a time to speak with one of our ministers or lay persons.

DO I HAVE TO DONATE?

Be assured, visitors are in no way forced to contribute to the offering.

What to Expect on Sunday Morning

PARKING

Take advantage of our parking lot on the north side where our new gathering entrance is, as well as the free parking lot to the east of the church (City Hall parking lot).  You may also find some on-street parking south of the church of Washington St as well as the free parking lot one block to the west of the church.  We ask that parking in the new parking lot be reserved for those who need assistance into the building.

ENTRANCES

FCC has several entrances open on Sunday mornings.  Come in through the Tompkins St door , new entrances from the parking lot (north side), from Washington St, or take the stairs on west side of the church.

ELEVATOR

Yes!  FCC now has a new elevator to make entrance into the building easier for any occasion.  The new elevator services all floors of the church including the Fellowship Hall.

DURING WORSHIP

ARRIVAL

You will be greeted by various friendly people. As you enter the sanctuary, an usher will offer you a bulletin which will outline worship including hymns and scripture.  Sit wherever you'd like.  Whether you want to meet and greet or just take your seat, the choice is yours and we respect that!

WORSHIP TIME

A typical worship at FCC is usually interactive with special readers from the congregation.  You will most likely experience a mix of new music and old hymns, a Call to Worship, time to greet each other, a children's moment, prayer, message, communion, an offering, and benediction.  It usually lasts under one hour.

As Disciples of Christ, we practice weekly Communion as a central component of worship and a reminder that Christ is the ultimate influence of our daily lives. Everyone is welcome to partake in communion. Learn more about our practices of unity here.

Sharing the Faith with Children

NURSERY

Child care for infants through toddlers is available in our nursery in the education/admin wing of the church.  Any member will be glad to direct you.  Children of all ages are always welcome to stay in the sanctuary.

WORSHIP AND WONDER

Disciples of Christ offers a unique experience for children from 3 years old to 3rd grade.  In Worship & Wonder, children have the opportunity to hear Bible stories and learn about church traditions - with a twist!  In this Montessori-based environment, children are encouraged to ask questions and form responses based on their own life experiences.  It is a time of engagement and thought provoking conversations.

Children are invited upstairs for Worship & Wonder just after worship begins, so children interested in participating should initially come to the sanctuary.  They will be escorted to W&W after the childrens' moment.  After worship, please pick up your child at door in the back of the sanctuary, next to the choir loft after worship.

Sunday School

9:00 AM - 9:55 AM

Coffee and Contemplation

All adults are invited to the parlor for Coffee & Contemplation each Sunday at 9 a.m.  We spend time catching up and discussing something spiritually topical.  We reflect on scripture and pray.  It is a time look into different points of view and grow together.  And, of course, there is coffee!

The nursery is available during Sunday School.
